Whether you call them Shell Scripts, Batch Files or just plain Scripts, Shell Scripts are here to stay. In this Series of Videos, we show you how to script. Whether you are just beginning or have been scripting for a while, you’re sure to find a lot of great information in this series.

Introduction to Shell Scripting

Basic Shell Scripting

Environment Variables

Environment variables are assigned values used by your computer, to identify things such as your computername, windows directory and more. Plus they’re also used by real scripters to produce real scripts. In this video we show you how to use them!

Arguments

Arguments are a great way of providing more flexibility and depth to your scripts as they allow user input. In this video, we show you how to win in arguments.

Loops

In this video we introduce you to Loops. Loops are an important part of shell scripts as they allow you to execute a set of commands against multiple objects. You’ll be using Loops regularly, so be sure to watch this video!

Operators

Whether we like it or not, we use Operators to perform our Arithmetic. As with our Loops, Operators are important as we use them to add, subtract, multiply, divide and more. You’ll learn them too…right here!

Redirection

Scripts are great, but sometimes you want to save a copy of its output. Sometimes, you don’t want to see any output at all. In this video we show you how to both suppress your scripts output, as well as show successes, failures and export to things like text and html.

The IF Statement

In this video we take a look at using the IT Statement. The IF Statement allows you to evaluate conditions to see if they are true and then perform a task based on the results. For example, if our script is looking for a file to be present on our hard drive, then we can use the IF Statement to look for the file. If it is there, we can use the IF Statement to perform a task. If the file is not there, we can again use the IF Statement to do something else.
